I have been trying to carry when I can. I am still working out some of the mechanics of when, where, and how.

It is clear to me that the less administrative manipulation of the gun, the better. By that I mean, it is better to put the gun on and leave it there, rather than having to take it out of the holster and put it someplace else because I have to go someplace where it is not allowed.

Another conclusion I have come to, is that if you are going to carry, you should carry all the time, or as near to that as possible, rather than trying to decide when you are going to be exposed to a risk that requires you to be armed. You can't really predict what situations might become threatening, and if you could avoidence would usually be in order.

Both of these considerations apply to the question of carrying in church. Like you, I don't think I would choose to attend a church where I would feel threatened enough to need to be armed, or where other members felt so threatened. I don't know of any such church, but I suppose one might exist.

So, to me the question comes down to whether a chuch should be a place where I should have to specifically disarm myself. There is a certain small risk involved in taking the gun off and storing it in the car. There is some small risk of theft while the gun is left in the car. There is also some small risk of armed attack in a church.

I am not convinced that the risk of attack is much less in a church than in a school. There have been newsworthy incidents in chuches in recent years. There have been more incidents in schools, but I'm not convinced that the difference is large enough to be significant.

While some of my ancestors belonged to pacifist churches(Mennonite), where arms would certainly not be worn, I am unlikely to join such a church. I just don't see a church as being a place where I should disarm myself. In adition to pacifist denominations there are many churches that wish to ban concealed carry for political reasons. In these churches, the pastor and/or the congregation are against all concealed carry and wish to ban guns in their churches because that is the one place where they have that power. While these churches should have that right, I reserve the option of taking that ban as telling me that I am not welcome in their church.

Congrats on passing your test (I'm sure you did we...

Congrats on passing your test (I'm sure you did well).
Man that gun show was a waste! Although there was one decent knife vendor, the majority of the show was disappointing. It would be nice to find a gun show where the majority of the items for sale were older, used firearms. New guns are great, but we all know you aren't going to find a deal on a new gun at a gun show. I would like to see a show (and it doesn't have to be extravagant) where the focus was on used firearms people were interested in selling or trading.
<link rel='edit' As a poorly paid Private in the US Army I looked for every bargain I could find and on several occasions came home with a fine rifle (FN-FAL Para for $700), pistol (H&K P7 $400) and countless rounds of ammunition for both. However, the 1990's saw not only the introduction of Slick Willie's Brady Bill, but also a change the the quality of gun shows. Now everyone selling wants more than what the things are worth and those buying want you to give your guns away and many vendors are downright dishonest (I'll go into my CZ 75 Compact high capacity magazine story at a later date!).
On top of the exorbitant prices and persons and dealers of questionable business practices, I am somewhat dismayed over the content of today's gun show. As the lovely Gurl pointed out, gun shows have taken on a flea market atmosphere. Now it's one thing to wade past the lone neo-nazi selling the Turner Diaries (note they never look you in the eye) and the stand for the Po-Dunk state militia, but where do beanie babies, beef jerky and gutter guards fall into the firearms lexicon?
Perhaps my better half is right, I tend to live in my own little world, where gun people don't cheat gun people and you can find a decent Colt New Service in 45LC without suffering endless tables of garage sale junk through...anyone know where I can get some good kangaroo jerky?

Maxpedition has a great line of products.
